A Total Hip Replacement is a common surgery for people with hip pain caused by degenerative joint disease or rheumatoid arthritis. The surgery is to restore motion of the joint and function to the muscles and ligaments. The top of the femoral bone (thigh bone) is cut off and a new round piece is inserted into the bone. This piece goes into the bone at least 4 inches. The cup on the pelvic bone is scraped out and a new cup is secured into the hip bone. You will stay in the hospital after surgery.

This is an outpatient surgery.

  • Hip Fractures

Hip Fractures are named by the location and can be categorized as femoral neck fractures(the neck of the thigh bone), intertrochanteric fractures (the head of the thigh bone), and subtrochanteric fractures (upper portion of the thigh bone). How the fracture is fixed, depends on where on the thigh bone the fracture occurred. It may be secured with metal screws or nails attached to metal plates. Ask your doctor how the fracture will be fixed. You will stay in the hospital after surgery.
